The Linguistics BA and Experimental Linguistics BSc programs have numerous foundational components in common to establish your linguistic studies. During the BA's initial year, all required modules create a comprehensive linguistics base while helping you identify your personal interests and strengths. Alongside mandatory courses in key areas like semantics, pragmatics, phonetics, phonology, and syntax, you'll complete a module focused on language acquisition.
In your second year, you'll enroll in four intermediate linguistics modules covering essential subjects. Additionally, you can choose four optional modules from the department's extensive selection, with the option to take two of these outside the department.
Linguistics examines humanity's language abilities. UCL students explore global languages' sound systems (Phonetics and Phonology) and grammatical frameworks (Syntax), along with how we form and employ meaningful expressions (Semantics and Pragmatics). Our programs enable students to investigate diverse topics such as language learning and processing, multilingualism, sociolinguistics, language evolution, and animal communication.
