Around 60 faculty members in PIR have gained global recognition for their scholarly work and have received multiple honors for teaching, research, and mentorship. Their academic pursuits span a wide variety of topics related to Scotland, Europe, and global affairs, with findings published in prestigious journals and books.

The department maintains a rich legacy of engaging with policymakers at Scottish, UK, European, and international levels, offering counsel and stimulating debate, while also housing a significant group of political theorists.

This program requires three to four years of full-time research. Students work with their supervisor and the Postgraduate Adviser to create a personalized training plan, which is evaluated and adjusted yearly.

During the first year, students develop essential research skills and refine their research questions and methodology with supervisor support. Upon completing their studies, they submit a thesis and undergo an oral examination (viva voce) assessed by two examiners (typically one internal and one external to the University).

The thesis represents an extensive, original investigation into a specialized topic within politics and international relations, contributing new insights to the field.

Research in this discipline examines the principles, applications, and ethical dimensions of political systems and governance.

Our expertise encompasses diverse areas, from local governance to global institutions, theoretical frameworks to empirical analysis, and various methodological approaches.

The Politics & International Relations group collaborates closely with interdisciplinary, world-renowned research centers.

Key research themes include:

regional and supranational aspects of politics and public policy
the effects of devolution in the UK and beyond, along with EU constitutional and governance structures
international relations: evolving dynamics, contemporary security challenges, transatlantic partnerships, political economy, migration policies, and global governance
nationalism, democratic reforms, civil society development, and institutional design
policies concerning healthcare, social welfare, environmental protection, economic competition, migration, citizenship, and equality
political philosophy, particularly ethics of conflict, environmental ethics, and theories of liberty.
