Pursuing a doctorate allows you to create novel, impactful research contributions in German Studies. The University of Edinburgh was among the first institutions to teach German as a European language. Our department has evolved into one of the largest Modern Languages programs at the University and a major research hub. We facilitate diverse cultural and literary research spanning from medieval times to contemporary works.
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, our work was evaluated under Modern Languages. The outcomes confirm Edinburgh's standing as a top-tier UK research institution - ranking third nationally for research quality and scope in Modern Languages per Times Higher Education's REF power rankings.
Our specialized research areas encompass:
18th century literature and Romanticism
The works of Bertolt Brecht
Censorship research
Modern German literature
Cultural/political analysis and literary criticism
