The MSc in Science and Technology in Society provides a thorough foundation in science and technology studies (STS), designed for students seeking to grasp both the theoretical and practical dynamics between science and societal structures.
Undeniably, science and technology define key aspects of modern societies. They permeate every facet of human (and other) existence—from daily routines to life's final moments. Yet what grants science, technology, and innovation such profound sway over human affairs? What is the source of their transformative power? In essence: what sets them apart? Conversely, can we truly claim that societies and individuals lack agency against scientific and technological progress? Are there valid reasons to challenge traditional notions of expertise? Why do governing bodies (and certain international institutions) pursue regulatory frameworks for scientific progress? What drives the growing emphasis on public participation in innovation, patient advocacy in healthcare, and calls for ethical research practices?
These core inquiries shape our curriculum. Participants will examine them through multiple perspectives and diverse theoretical frameworks across various contexts.
