The Scandinavian nations have significantly influenced languages, history, politics, and culture far beyond their Nordic borders. You'll examine both historical and contemporary Scandinavian culture while learning one of the region's languages. Our University is renowned for its Scandinavian studies research. Through frequent research seminars and cultural activities, you'll stay informed about cutting-edge developments in Scandinavian scholarship and traditions. Whether you focus on Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish as your primary language, you'll develop reading comprehension in the other two throughout your studies. No prior language experience is necessary, as beginner-level courses are offered. The intimate class settings foster a welcoming and supportive academic atmosphere. Social policy analyzes how societies distribute welfare and wellbeing, examining the policies that shape this distribution. This field primarily investigates social and economic transformations—their causes and societal impacts. It particularly explores how services like social security, healthcare, education, housing, personal social services, criminal justice, and labor markets can mitigate the effects of social change. You'll study both UK policy formation (including Scottish devolution) and the role of international organizations like the EU and OECD in shaping policies.
