Celtic Studies offers a unique blend of language learning and exploration of both medieval and contemporary Celtic cultures across the British Isles. Students engage with leading scholars to examine the rich traditions of Celtic-speaking communities while mastering one of the region's Celtic languages.
The University maintains vibrant exchange programs with Trinity College Dublin and institutions in North America and Australia that specialize in Celtic studies. Alumni have pursued diverse career paths in education, cultural heritage, publishing, music, and business ventures, while others have continued into advanced research and academic positions.
Students who completed Celtic Civilisation coursework in their initial years can opt to learn Scottish Gaelic or explore medieval Celtic history alongside ancient Celtic languages. The curriculum features specialized courses covering various cultural and literary topics, including early Irish and Scottish Gaelic traditions, Scottish language policy, folklore studies, ancient Celtic literature, Welsh medieval writings, and Celtic artistic expressions. Honors students gain access to advanced seminars on historical themes like medieval Ireland, the Northern Britons, and Pictish civilization. The program culminates with an independent research project, enabling students to investigate a self-selected topic while honing their autonomous research skills.
