The field of linguistics explores the mechanics of language, analyzing how sounds, vocabulary, syntax, and discourse interact to convey and construct meaning.
It investigates:
language's role in daily communication
its societal variations and historical development
how children acquire language skills
The University of Edinburgh boasts a rich tradition in linguistics, with faculty renowned for their research contributions.
For most undergraduates, linguistics presents a completely new academic discipline, requiring no previous background when starting the program.
Students complete two semester-long introductory courses covering fundamental linguistic theories. These examine language acquisition, geographical and social language variations (with particular focus on English), and communication methods. Joint honors students will additionally take courses from their secondary subject. The program continues with four more semester-long courses (or two for certain joint honors students), delving deeper into linguistic theory, research methodologies, English language structure, and historical language evolution both within and beyond Britain.
