The Diploma in Professional Legal Practice prepares students for careers as solicitors or advocates in Scotland.
Course content is established by the national Joint Standing Committee on Legal Education, along with the Diploma Co-ordinating Committee and various working groups comprising university representatives and legal professionals.
This program emphasizes hands-on legal skills needed for professional practice.
Required courses cover:
Conveyancing
Private Client Law
Civil Court Procedures
Criminal Court Procedures
Financial Services and Related Skills
Corporate and Commercial Law
Professional Ethics and Responsibilities.
Students can also choose from elective courses such as Construction Law or Estate Planning, typically offered in February/March.
Compared to undergraduate studies, this program features a significantly heavier workload with more contact hours, often in small group workshops.
Active participation in practical sessions is essential, with attendance being mandatory. Missing workshops will result in ineligibility for final examinations.
Substantial preparation for exercises and in-class evaluations is often required, with a strong focus on developing legal competencies throughout the program.
