This program culminates in Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) certification for teaching students aged 11-16, enabling you to work in secondary schools across England and Wales. When opportunities arise, we also provide exposure to teaching the 11-18 age group. School computing education has evolved significantly, with pupils now learning programming and digital skills starting at age five. The modern computing curriculum combines elements of traditional ICT with computer science principles.
Our program helps cultivate exceptional computing educators capable of creating dynamic, varied lessons that captivate and educate all students.
You'll acquire the expertise to design and conduct illuminating classes, teaching young learners about Earth's diverse populations, geographical features, environmental processes, and remarkable natural heritage. The subject-focused training demonstrates effective strategies for supporting both challenged and advanced students.
Initial university training features weekly lectures on key themes, followed by seminar discussions. You'll collaborate in both subject-specific and interdisciplinary groups.
We structure our training to mirror a school environment, primarily teaching in intimate groups of 30 rather than large lecture halls, ensuring substantial subject-focused interaction time.
The University of East London established its Secondary PGCE program in 2001 through collaboration with local authorities to alleviate teacher shortages in East London secondary schools. Our partnership benefits from the involvement of multiple London boroughs including Barking & Dagenham, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Waltham Forest, and Redbridge.
This strong local connection means our alumni teach in nearly every East London secondary school, with many advancing to deputy head positions or senior leadership roles in schools that host our current trainees.
