This distinctive and adaptable program blends university-level instruction in French, Spanish, or Japanese with an exploration of contemporary translation challenges and media studies.
Your language acquisition will encompass reading and listening exercises, bidirectional translation between English and your target language, précis and paraphrasing tasks, analysis of various styles and registers, vocabulary-building activities, and conversational practice. All coursework utilizes modern materials rather than historical or literary texts. During your overseas year, you'll apply these skills in real-world settings, elevating your linguistic abilities before selecting specialized language courses in your final year.
Optional non-credit modules with certification may allow you to study a third language, with potential choices including Arabic, British Sign Language, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Spanish, Russian, or Advanced English, subject to availability.
While honing your language proficiency, you'll examine translation theories and methods, analyzing style and register across specialized fields. The curriculum explores globalization's impact through diverse translation forms, including adaptations across languages, media formats, and genres. You can also select from specialized modules focusing on translation, media, culture, and society.
The overseas academic year is mandatory for all four-year language degree programs.
During your third year, you'll immerse yourself in a country where your chosen language is spoken, either through university study (all languages) or via teaching assistantships/work placements (available for French and Spanish only), significantly enriching your cultural and linguistic understanding.
