The BA Honours in Translation Studies equips you with essential skills, knowledge, and competencies for a successful career in professional translation.
You'll acquire expertise in language structure, register, text analysis, and discourse by applying linguistic principles to real-world translation projects. Additionally, you'll develop versatile cognitive abilities that support continuous growth in both personal and professional spheres.
Depending on your starting level, you can pair French as your primary language with another (Arabic, Chinese, or Spanish) or opt for the Global Communication pathway. The integrated curriculum emphasizes professional contexts, communication techniques, bilingual translation skills, and theoretical foundations. Your coursework may involve learning a new foreign language or exploring cultural studies. Instruction combines traditional lectures, interactive seminars, hands-on workshops, independent study, and immersive professional simulations.
Beyond core translation modules, the program provides diverse electives addressing global communications, cultural studies, contemporary issues, politics, and gender topics. You may also choose to spend an academic year abroad in a Francophone country, either studying or, depending on your proficiency, undertaking work or volunteer placements.
Graduates pursue careers not only in translation but also as interpreters, language educators (teaching both foreign languages and ESL), and professionals across multiple industries including legal services, marketing, journalism, and government sectors.
