This program serves as the initial step for those pursuing a conventional path into secondary teaching. It addresses the Initial Teacher Education component of your professional journey. After successfully completing an induction year in a school setting (Teaching Induction Scheme), you'll earn certification to teach English across Scotland.
The curriculum blends two campus-based learning modules with three practical school placements, providing essential classroom experience and skills development. You'll examine theoretical approaches to teaching English language and literature to students of various ages, with particular emphasis on enhancing learners' literacy skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The program also includes instruction on effectively supporting students' numeracy, health, and well-being.
With intentionally limited class sizes, you'll enjoy close-knit support from both faculty and peers. Each student receives personalized guidance from an assigned tutor—an experienced secondary English educator—who will also evaluate your performance during placements. Furthermore, you'll be paired with a mentor at each placement school.
The program offers various elective choices, allowing you to specialize in areas like outdoor education, collaborative learning techniques, or drama instruction.
