The PhD program in Stuart History, covering the Civil War and English Republic era (1649-1660), represents an advanced research qualification granted upon completion of a thesis and oral defense. This doctoral degree focuses on developing and presenting a significant, independent scholarly work, typically completed within three years for full-time students or six years for part-time candidates. Exceptional students demonstrating accelerated progress may qualify for early submission.

Students can explore a vast array of research topics within British History spanning the extended seventeenth century - from James VI of Scotland's ascension as James I of England in 1603 until Queen Anne's death in 1714. Recent dissertation topics have included early 17th-century Anglo-French diplomacy, the political influence of the second Earl of Warwick during the Civil War, and post-1688 Revolution financial systems supporting British governance. The University welcomes applicants investigating any dimension of Stuart Britain's social, religious, political, or cultural history.
