The Doctor of Philosophy in Modern European History represents an advanced research qualification, granted upon completion of a dissertation and oral defense. This program focuses on developing and presenting a significant, independent scholarly work, typically finished within three years for full-time students or six years for part-time enrollment. Exceptional candidates demonstrating accelerated progress may qualify for early submission.

Thesis topics in Modern European History span a vast spectrum, covering everything from political leadership and global negotiations to societal dynamics and cultural artifacts across the continent from the late 18th century through the 20th century. With adequate supporting materials, nearly any facet of Europe's modern historical narrative can serve as valid research territory. Defining the dissertation topic involves an evolving process, with initial concepts often refined during the first academic year.
