Located in the city that deeply influenced Charles Dickens' literary career, this innovative London research initiative provides students with exclusive opportunities to collaborate with renowned scholars and professionals in Dickens Studies and media, along with privileged access to the exceptional archives of the Charles Dickens Museum. The program is led by Professor John Drew and Dr. Pete Orford, internationally recognized Dickens authorities who also teach in the university's prestigious Department of English and Digital Media.
This program allows students to conduct specialized research on approved topics within Dickens Studies, covering his novels, short stories, journalism, theatrical works, public readings, adaptations (film and stage), as well as comparative studies of translations and works by his predecessors, contemporaries, and literary successors. The research culminates in three preparatory components: a detailed research proposal, an annotated bibliography, and a focused case study utilizing either the Charles Dickens Museum archives or materials from the university's acclaimed Dickens Journals Online project. After successfully completing these preliminary projects, students advance to writing a minimum 20,000-word dissertation under expert supervision.
