The French Department fosters groundbreaking research and outstanding scholarship across diverse areas of French studies. Our faculty possesses remarkable breadth in specialties spanning medieval and early modern eras, visual-textual connections, literature from the 19th to 21st centuries, film and theatrical adaptations, cultural history, political studies, and comparative literature. We maintain strong interdisciplinary partnerships with other departments, particularly in visual/literary studies, conflict analysis, medieval research, English, and comparative literature.
Every graduate researcher works closely with a primary advisor specializing in their chosen field, supplemented by a secondary supervisor who may come from another department when projects require cross-disciplinary perspectives.
As a hub for the Group for War and Culture Studies, our department actively participates in numerous Faculty of Arts research initiatives. Several faculty members hold editorial positions at prominent academic journals and leadership roles in professional associations.
Graduate students may participate in an academic exchange program with Paris's prestigious École Normale Supérieure (rue d'Ulm) or secure teaching positions at Université de Bordeaux III.
Our research students spearhead both a seminar series exploring literary and visual environments and a project dedicated to publishing graduate creative writing.
