Over the past twenty years, the University of Brighton has played a pivotal role in advancing research on crucial social, political, and environmental issues shaping modern life. Our human geography faculty and doctoral candidates spearhead studies exploring power dynamics, social movements, bodily politics, accessibility, property rights, and citizenship—bridging the connections between society, space, and the natural world.
A substantial portion of our research adopts a critical perspective on tangible realities while striving to shape progressive change. Scholars within our Centre for Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics, along with our Society, Space and Environment Research Group, investigate pressing matters such as gender disparities, urban livability, biopolitical migration, emotional geographies, post-industrial transitions, contemporary commons theory in activism, and the ecological impacts of resource extraction across diverse global settings.
