Pursuing a BA in Ancient and Medieval History at the University of Birmingham allows you to examine various eras, regions, and civilizations within a top-tier research environment. You'll journey through the foundations of modern society in Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the Medieval period. Our program uniquely combines literature, history, and archaeology to investigate these ancient and medieval societies, with specialized focus on European and Near Eastern cultures spanning from roughly 3000 BCE to 1500 CE. A key area of study is social history—understanding daily life, labor, commerce, and recreation in past civilizations. By examining such varied cultures, you'll critically assess the intricate connections between the Ancient and Medieval periods. Learning resources include the Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology Museum and the Eton Myers Collection. The first year builds essential historical research skills, while the second year emphasizes small-group instruction and independent study to refine your expertise. In your final year, you'll explore advanced modules and complete a Dissertation, using primary sources to address a historical question developed during your studies.
