Apply advanced quantitative methods from diverse disciplines at a more sophisticated level than typically available. Gain interdisciplinary perspectives from fields like social and policy sciences, economics, psychology, and health through collaboration with various research groups.Program OverviewThis pathway caters to social scientists seeking to master cutting-edge quantitative techniques for addressing discipline-specific research questions, as well as statistically-oriented researchers focused on methodological development. You'll join an interdisciplinary community of social scientists applying quantitative approaches across fields - for instance, utilizing economic methodologies to examine political science questions.Research opportunities may include adapting statistical methods from other disciplines to social science challenges or creating innovative analytical approaches for social data. The program culminates in a substantial research project, featuring a comprehensive written thesis (typically around 90,000 words) designed to make meaningful contributions to academic discourse. For interdisciplinary pathways, primary supervision comes from the applicant's home institution, with mandatory secondary supervision from a distinct discipline (not merely a sub-discipline). Both supervisors must be affiliated with SWDTP partner institutions: Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, or UWE Bristol.Evaluation ProcessProspective students interested in the combined MRes/PhD (1+3) pathway should apply directly for the PhD program while indicating their MRes interest on the application form.Advancement from MRes to PhD requires maintaining a Master's-level Merit standard (minimum 60%) at application, with funding contingent upon achieving at least 60% in both coursework and dissertation components. Most PhD candidates initially enter as probationary researchers. Full PhD registration depends on successful completion of an assessment process, typically comprising written submissions and an oral examination.
