The MMus in Music builds upon the department's strong research focus, catering to composers (working with vocals, instruments, or electronics), performers, sound artists, musicologists (specializing in any genre), as well as music education and community music professionals with specific academic interests. Students can tailor their studies by choosing one or two specializations from six available tracks: Community Music, Composition, Music Education, Musicology, Performance, and Sonic Arts. Applicants must specify their chosen specialization(s) in their application. The program's cornerstone is an extensive project where students develop a major work with guidance from expert supervisors. The project format adapts to each student's focus and research goals, offering substantial flexibility. This enables participants to create a substantial portfolio that serves as a launchpad for professional advancement in either industry or academia.Beyond the core project, students complete a combination of required and elective courses. The MMus Program Coordinator works individually with each student to align course selections with their academic and professional aspirations. This program has three primary objectives:1. To facilitate a smooth transition from undergraduate studies (both at Aberdeen and other institutions) to advanced work in composition, community music, musicology, music education, performance, or sonic arts - either individually or in combination;2. To support students in exploring and advancing their career pathways in academic or professional settings;3. To further strengthen the Music Department's research culture. The MMus also welcomes professionals seeking to refine their skills through continuing education, whether they choose full-time or part-time study, following years of practical experience after their initial degree.
