At Sussex, we embrace music technologies in their broadest interpretation—from crafting instruments and studio production to pioneering new musical expressions through augmented reality and virtual platforms. If you're passionate about exploring, innovating, and performing with cutting-edge musical technologies, this is your ideal environment.
You will:
create a collection of original works that push the boundaries of music technology practice and theory
complete a 20,000-40,000-word thesis showcasing groundbreaking research. Your dissertation will illustrate how your work significantly contributes to your field's knowledge base while engaging with existing academic and artistic traditions.
Gain access to state-of-the-art resources, including advanced software and hardware in the Jonathan Harvey Electronic Music Studio at the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts. Join the Experimental Music Technologies Lab, a hub for researching emerging music technologies, and collaborate with the Sussex Humanities Lab.
Opt for either a PhD or MPhil program. These degrees vary in duration and research scope. A PhD requires substantial original contributions to your field's knowledge, while an MPhil involves independent research at a more focused level, culminating in a Master of Philosophy degree. You may have the opportunity to transition from an MPhil to a PhD during your studies.
