The History department is committed to offering PhD researchers top-tier resources for their academic pursuits. Postgraduate workspaces with computer and internet access are provided across all campuses. Our university boasts an impressive array of research materials, featuring archives from prominent newspapers like the Times, New York Times, Irish Times, Guardian, and regional publications. The collection includes significant British government documents from 1916-1945, along with the personal library of Sir James Headlam Morley, who served as historical advisor to Britain's Paris Peace Conference delegation. Our library houses one of the most comprehensive microfilm collections of American historical materials in Britain and Ireland, with particular strengths in African-American history (including slavery and Civil Rights) and the study of radical political movements.
Ulster's History department fosters a rigorous research environment for postgraduate students, consistently achieving world-leading and internationally excellent ratings. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, 60% of our publications, 75% of our research environment, and 75% of our real-world impact were rated at these highest levels. Our PhD completion rates are exceptional, showing a 52% improvement between 2014 and 2021. The department is proud to host the Centre for the History of Medicine in Ireland (CHOMI), which has secured multiple prestigious grants and maintains a vibrant postgraduate community. We encourage applications from those interested in diverse historical fields including Irish, British, European, Mediterranean, Russian/Soviet history, along with specialized areas like medical humanities, labor history, migration studies, and decolonization research.
