The School of Geography and Environmental Sciences brings together scholars studying diverse human and natural environments to tackle pressing global and regional challenges affecting modern society. Our research spans five continents, 31 nations, and three major oceans, establishing a strong platform for addressing worldwide concerns. In REF2021, we demonstrated exceptional research quality with 84% of publications and 100% of research impact rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, while 88% of our research environment received international recognition.
Our School offers PhD candidates exceptional resources and support systems. Specialized postgraduate spaces foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and a dynamic research culture. We actively involve researchers in school activities, providing platforms for academic discourse, skill development, teaching experience, and professional networking. Our comprehensive facilities include laboratories, IT support, specialized field equipment, and transport. The 2019 Advance HE survey revealed our PhD program's excellence, with 83.6% overall satisfaction - surpassing both the national average (82.4%) and geography-specific benchmarks (79%), demonstrating our thriving research community's strength.
