Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in Egyptology allows you to engage in an extensive research initiative driven by your personal academic interests.
The doctoral program spans three years for full-time students or six years part-time, while the MPhil requires two years full-time or four years part-time.
Candidates must submit a dissertation not exceeding 100,000 words for PhD evaluation or 60,000 words for MPhil assessment, showcasing innovative research that advances the field of Egyptology. This academic work culminates in an oral defense of the dissertation (known as a viva voce examination).
Operating at the highest scholarly level, you'll undertake groundbreaking investigations into ancient Egyptian civilization, including its history, archaeology, religious practices, and linguistic systems covering all phases of Egyptian language development - from demotic script to hieroglyphic inscriptions in Graeco-Roman temples, along with literary studies and cultural examinations spanning the Ptolemaic and Roman eras.
You'll refine essential research competencies necessary for advanced work in any Egyptology specialization, complemented by skills development programs offered on campus. The department encourages participation in academic seminars and the School of Culture and Communication's postgraduate conference, where you can present your findings to fellow researchers and faculty.
From your second year onward, you may have opportunities to lead undergraduate tutorials and seminars, receiving both training and compensation. Subject to approval, financial assistance may also be available for conference attendance or research activities conducted beyond Swansea University.
