Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in Development Studies at Swansea allows you to undertake an in-depth research project driven by your personal interests. These prestigious degrees can open doors to academic careers or enhance job prospects in sectors like education, government, or private industry. The full-time PhD program spans three years (six years part-time), while the MPhil requires two years of full-time study (four years part-time). Candidates must submit a thesis - up to 100,000 words for PhD candidates or 60,000 words for MPhil students - showcasing original research that advances the field. This is followed by an oral defense (viva voce examination). Our vibrant research community is supported by dedicated faculty members who contribute to specialized Research Groups: the Global Drug Policy Observatory (GDPO), International Studies, Conflict and Security (ISCAS), and Political Analysis and Government (PAG). Their expertise covers diverse areas including Human Rights and International Development, International Security Studies, Conflict and Political Development, Transitional Justice, and Development Policy. Throughout your studies, you'll refine essential research skills for advanced work in development studies, complemented by campus-based training programs. You'll also have chances to present your work at departmental seminars and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference.
