The International Development Department (IDD) fosters innovative approaches in development studies, global politics, and public policy. Pursuing a research degree with IDD connects you to a vibrant community of scholars and practitioners dedicated to helping you achieve your academic aspirations.

When you enroll in a PhD program in International Development, you'll work closely with faculty supervisors to produce groundbreaking research within a dynamic academic setting focused on creating tangible impact, culminating in an 80,000-word dissertation. Your first year includes essential research training modules, with opportunities to participate in additional departmental or university courses that build both specialized and transferable skills.

Qualification Requirements

Excellent undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Typically the latter will be a taught masters degree, including a dissertation. Normally candidates for the PhD programme will initially be offered a place on the MPhil programme and will be transferred to the PhD at the end of the first year, subject to a satisfactory review of progress. Students need to have an IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band is equivalent to: TOEFL: 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 21 Listening, 22 Speaking and 21 in Writing; Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 67 in all four skills; Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced - minimum overall score of 176, with no less than 169 in any component.
