An MA by Research in Modern Languages allows you to pursue an in-depth project driven by your personal interests, without the commitment of a PhD. This prestigious degree can open doors to academic careers or expand job opportunities in education, government, or private industry. The program lasts one year full-time or two years part-time, ideal for those seeking their first research degree after coursework or considering future PhD studies. Under expert supervision, you'll conduct original research culminating in a thesis that advances modern language scholarship. Swansea's Modern Languages department covers Arabic, French, German, and Hispanic Studies, with research spanning medieval literature to contemporary European cinema. While we offer Italian and Mandarin expertise, advanced language skills aren't mandatory for admission, depending on your research focus. Some comparative literature and film projects can be conducted using English translations.

You'll receive dedicated guidance from two qualified supervisors throughout your studies, with biweekly meetings initially and regular sessions thereafter.
The program helps refine essential research skills for advanced modern language studies, supplemented by campus training opportunities. You'll present your work at departmental seminars and the School of Culture and Communication's postgraduate conference.

Qualification Requirements

MA by Research - You should hold or expect to achieve a minimum of an upper second class honours degree (2:1), or equivalent, in a related subject (e.g. Modern Languages, Media Studies, or English Literature) or hold relevant work experience. Applicants to this programme would normally be expected to meet the minimum entry requirements indicated above. The College/School reserves the right to ask for higher academic grades and qualifications. Admissions decisions take into account not only prior academic qualifications, but also factors including the standard of the research synopsis/proposal submitted by the applicant, their performance at interview (if required), intensity of competition for limited places and relevant professional experience (where appropriate). If English is not your first language you will need an acceptable pass in an approved English Language qualification to make sure you get the full benefit from studying at Swansea. We consider a wide range of qualifications, including the Swansea University English Test, the British Council IELTS test (with a score of at least 6.5 and 6.5 in each component).
