A thorough scholarly comprehension of Earth's biodiversity has never been more crucial. Examining living creatures in their astonishing diversity enables us to recognize both significant dangers and promising possibilities, from microscopic levels to global scales.
The Applied Research Year offers students a chance to complete a 9-12 month placement (minimum 40 weeks) within a research institution, providing hands-on investigative experience. Participants join research teams, engaging in daily scientific activities pertinent to their field of study. Typically, students contribute to several research initiatives, frequently working on sequential projects. This immersive experience cultivates sophisticated research capabilities, including proficiency with specialized equipment, analytical techniques, field surveys, and the application of proper experimental methodologies for data gathering and interpretation. Additional responsibilities may include preparing technical documentation, conducting literature reviews, and presenting scientific findings through various communication channels. The placement also offers valuable networking prospects to establish professional connections.
Our alumni have pursued careers as Environmental Scientists, Conservation Coordinators, Water Monitoring Specialists, Marine Biologists, Wildlife Educators, Zoological Caretakers, and Agricultural Technicians. The department maintains robust partnerships with prominent institutions including Natural Resources Wales, The British Mammal Society, and The National Wetlands Centre Wales, enhancing the academic experience.
