The MPhil/PhD in African Studies offers supervision for research projects leading to MPhil and PhD degrees across the broad field of African studies. Topics may include language studies (covering descriptive, comparative, philological, or textual approaches), literature (whether focused on authors, themes, or comparative analysis), or performing arts - all within our department's core expertise in African Languages, Cultures and Literatures. We also facilitate interdisciplinary research through joint supervision with other departments and centers.
Each new MPhil/PhD candidate receives guidance from a three-member supervisory committee, consisting of a primary supervisor (60% commitment), second supervisor (25%), and third supervisor (15%). First-year students typically meet their primary supervisor every two weeks for at least one hour. While the primary supervisor always comes from the student's registered department, the additional supervisors may be from other departments within the Faculty of Languages and Cultures or other School faculties. For certain research projects, we may recommend co-supervision with two primary supervisors, in which case the committee includes just one additional supervisor.
