The Department of Religions and Philosophies at SOAS fosters a dynamic, engaging, and cross-disciplinary research atmosphere. We deliver personalized research guidance across diverse religious traditions and comparative subjects. Our supervisors are leading specialists with deep expertise in their respective religions, cultures, languages, and regions. Beyond individual mentorship, the Department provides structured research training: a mandatory writing workshop for first-year MPhil students preparing for PhD upgrade, weekly progress seminars for second and third-year PhD candidates, and interdisciplinary departmental seminars where faculty and students present ongoing research. You'll also gain access to lectures, seminars, and conferences organized by SOAS's specialized research centers, including Jewish Studies, Japanese Religions, Buddhist Studies, Jaina Studies, and World Christianity. These centers host regular evening lectures, workshops, and international conferences featuring scholars from global institutions. By joining our Religions and Philosophies Research Degrees at SOAS as a PhD candidate, you'll become part of our worldwide doctoral community and contribute significantly to our thriving intellectual environment.
