The MPhil/PhD African Studies program offers supervision for research projects leading to MPhil and PhD degrees across the broad field of African studies. Topics may include language studies (descriptive, comparative, philological, or textual approaches), literature research (author-focused, thematic, or comparative analysis), or performing arts investigations, which are supervised directly by the African Languages, Cultures and Literatures Department when aligned with our core expertise. The program also encourages interdisciplinary collaboration through joint supervision with other departments and centers to expand research possibilities.
All candidates initially enroll as MPhil students in their first year. Full-time students can upgrade to PhD status after their first academic year, while part-time students do so following their second year. Each MPhil/PhD candidate receives guidance from a three-member supervisory committee consisting of a primary supervisor (60% time commitment), secondary supervisor (25%), and tertiary supervisor (15%). During the first year, students typically have bi-weekly one-hour meetings with their primary supervisor.
