The Politics program at SOAS is organized around four key areas: political theory, political sociology, political economy, and international relations. Students acquire comprehensive training in the theories and methodologies of these fields, which they then use to examine actual political scenarios. Through SOAS's Politics curriculum, learners develop in-depth expertise and a solid grasp of significant global power dynamics and ideological struggles. They also cultivate the ability to critically assess and apply social science frameworks to modern geopolitics, regional affairs in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, while gaining skills to analyze and compare political trends across nations.
Instruction in the Department of Politics and International Studies merges foundational political science training with a recognition that comparative studies must honor each nation's unique context. This perspective is enriched by collaborations with other SOAS departments. Consequently, a Politics degree from SOAS provides exceptional insights into worldwide political affairs, with coursework spanning three-quarters of the planet's regions. The BA in Politics can be pursued as either a single or combined degree. Available courses range from Government and Politics of Asia, China, the Middle East, and Africa to International Politics, Islam and Democracy, Development Politics, Globalization and Global Governance, and Cultural Politics.
