Royal Holloway offers a distinctive philosophy program that transcends the traditional boundaries of Anglo-American analytic and European philosophical traditions, instead exploring their interplay and connections. This innovative approach has fostered an interdisciplinary and collaborative curriculum, drawing on expertise from various university departments.
Housed within the Department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy, our faculty members are not just committed educators but also recognized scholars in their respective fields. The department's expertise spans diverse philosophical areas including ancient Greek thought, modern European philosophy, contemporary analytic philosophy, and American pragmatism.
Beyond conventional lectures and seminars, first-year students participate in weekly small-group tutorials with philosophy faculty. These sessions focus on discussing assigned readings and evaluating written work, cultivating essential critical thinking and interpersonal abilities for advanced academic study and professional life. This three-year program enhances students' comprehension of seminal philosophical works while developing crucial analytical, collaborative, and argumentation skills, along with an appreciation for different philosophical traditions' foundational principles.
