For more than a century, the School of Law has built an outstanding reputation in both teaching and scholarly work. Recognized as a premier hub for legal studies in the UK, our faculty members are esteemed authorities nationally and internationally.
We provide PhD guidance spanning all legal disciplines, accommodating diverse methodologies ranging from doctrinal analysis to sociolegal, comparative, criminological, and critical approaches.
Our doctoral graduates pursue dynamic careers, including academic positions at law faculties throughout the UK. Located in Belfast, we maintain close ties with legal practitioners and the judiciary, offering exceptional opportunities for studying law and its practical applications.
We actively integrate doctoral candidates into the School of Law community and broader university life. New PhD students benefit from a tailored training curriculum, while advanced researchers can access specialized programs through both the School and the University's Graduate School. From their second year onward, our PhD candidates may secure paid teaching roles, contribute to the Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly (among Britain's longest-running legal publications), participate in LawPod (the School's podcast initiative), or join student-driven research groups. Financial support is provided for those presenting at conferences or specialized seminars.
