The School's extensive research capabilities provide diverse opportunities for individuals pursuing doctoral studies in human or physical geography. Doctoral candidates receive dedicated guidance from our academic faculty members. We accept applications for both full-time and part-time study options. The School participates in several prestigious programs including the London Social Science ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (a collaboration between QMUL and Goldsmiths), the London NERC Doctoral Training Partnership, and the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programme focusing on 'Science for Management of Rivers and their Tidal Systems', along with frequent AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards. Prospective PhD candidates should explore the School of Geography's broad research domains. Our key research specialties encompass: migration research, development geography, global health studies (in partnership with the Blizard Institute), biosciences and health security, labor and global production networks (collaborating with Business and Management), home studies (jointly with the Geffrye Museum of the Home), urban geography and cultural politics, historical geography, knowledge and practice geographies, and environmental science (with expertise in freshwater biogeochemistry, river processes, aquatic ecosystem restoration, and geological archives).
A first-class honours degree in Mathematics or Statistics or the equivalent qualification from an overseas institution. If your qualifications are not from a UK university, QMUL also considers recognised equivalent qualifications from accredited overseas institutions and equivalent professional qualification. Ideally you should have a more advanced qualification such as MSci, MMath or MSc, in which case we expect at least an upper second in your undergraduate degree with a merit in your postgraduate degree. IELTS (Academic) minimum score 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each of Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking. TOEFL minimum score 92 overall with 21 in Writing, 19 in Reading, 18 in Listening and 21 in Speaking.
