Kent University focuses on examining the intricate, evolving connections between people and their surroundings, especially how these relationships manifest geographically. A central theme is how humans adjust to their environment and cope with environmental transformations.
Program Summary
Graduate research in Human Geography spans diverse subjects, but fundamentally explores the dynamic interplay between societies and their habitats. This includes investigations into social and cultural geography, urban and political geography, economic and development studies, plus environmental and landscape planning.
Doctoral Program
The PhD is a three-year full-time or five-year part-time degree. Candidates develop a thesis of up to 100,000 words under faculty guidance while engaging with the School's active seminar community. Students interact with leading Human Geography scholars throughout their studies.
The initial year emphasizes research methods training, followed by fieldwork, archival investigation, and thesis composition. Typically, students collaborate closely with two supervisors, supported by a three-member committee (including the principal advisor) to monitor academic progress.
