The English Department oversees research programs spanning diverse fields, from ancient texts to modern works and critical theory. PhD students receive guidance from two supervisors—a principal and secondary advisor—ensuring comprehensive support. We also facilitate co-supervision arrangements (with two primary advisors), either within our department or through partnerships with other Queen Mary departments. Our faculty consists of distinguished scholars, including internationally recognized experts. A first-class honours degree in Mathematics or Statistics or the equivalent qualification from an overseas institution. If your qualifications are not from a UK university, QMUL also considers recognised equivalent qualifications from accredited overseas institutions and equivalent professional qualification. Ideally you should have a more advanced qualification such as MSci, MMath or MSc, in which case we expect at least an upper second in your undergraduate degree with a merit in your postgraduate degree. Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall, with a 6.0 in all categories. TOEFL minimum score 92 overall with 21 in Writing, 19 in Reading, 18 in Listening and 21 in Speaking.
