NLS boasts a dynamic and varied community of postgraduate research students who play a vital role in our academic environment. The School provides options to pursue a PhD through full-time, part-time, or distance learning programs. Our legal scholars explore an extensive array of legal subjects utilizing diverse approaches, encompassing theoretical, doctrinal, and socio-legal methodologies. Prospective research degree applicants should reach out to the Postgraduate Research Tutor, Helen ONions, or faculty members whose specialties match their proposed research focus. Current faculty have indicated interest in evaluating proposals in these key areas: Conflict, Rights and Justice; Legal Education and Practice; Environmental Law; Medical Law and Ethics; Advocacy; Intellectual Property Law; Sports Law; Business and Insolvency; and International Criminal Law.
PhD or ProfD research demands distinct skills compared to undergraduate or taught postgraduate programs. While primarily focused on independent research, we stress the value of consistent meetings with your supervisory team.
This team includes a director of studies (typically an expert in your field) and at least one additional supervisor chosen for their complementary knowledge, such as specialized research methods.
All researchers benefit from a dedicated research librarian, cutting-edge library resources, and comprehensive research databases. They can utilize various academic software packages along with legal and social science databases like Westlaw, Lawtel, Hein-on-line, and LexisNexis, plus numerous other discipline-specific databases. Students enjoy access to abundant workstations and storage facilities at the NTU Doctoral School. This recently renovated space offers an ideal environment for doctoral candidates to study, collaborate, discuss their research, and exchange ideas.
