This education program equips graduates with the essential expertise, competencies, and practical training needed to teach English in secondary schools. The curriculum combines university-based learning with hands-on classroom experience, preparing trainees to become self-assured educators prepared for secondary teaching careers. Two qualification levels are available, both recognized teaching credentials, with the postgraduate option enabling accelerated access to Master's programs: Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Postgraduate Certificate in Education. Students select their preferred qualification during the course, with successful completion leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) endorsement.
The program focuses on cultivating subject expertise within the National Curriculum framework, pedagogical approaches for diverse learners, and professional values aligned with subject specialization. This encompasses child development across cognitive, social, and physical domains, along with classroom management skills and personal attributes for effective teaching environments.
All participants complete a module exploring broader educational contexts, developing the capabilities needed for initial secondary school teaching positions while establishing a basis for ongoing professional growth. The module features combined keynote lectures and seminars, frequently facilitated by trainee groups with tutor guidance. This approach helps meet Teachers' Standards by linking educational theory with practical classroom application.
