Science permeates every aspect of our daily existence. It has empowered humanity to accomplish feats once deemed impossible – from lunar landings to eradicating diseases. This remarkable journey begins with science education, where students nurture their inquisitiveness and investigate their surroundings. Our Secondary Physics PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) prepares you with effective methods to become a self-assured and accomplished science educator for KS3 and KS4 levels. You'll explore ways to help students grasp physics' crucial contribution to groundbreaking scientific advancements. Without physics, modern essentials like MRI scanners, laser surgeries, and other vital technologies wouldn't exist.
While specializing in physics, the program also incorporates chemistry and biology, enabling you to develop into a well-rounded science instructor. You'll gain hands-on experience in local schools, design captivating lessons, learn behavior management strategies, and understand student learning processes. On campus, we'll guide you in analyzing your teaching methods from a subject-specific viewpoint while providing personalized support.
Beyond teacher certification, our program offers exceptional value. As part of our Institute of Education, you'll access cutting-edge classroom research and evidence-based teaching methodologies. The PGCE includes practical demonstrations at our state-of-the-art £30m Science Centre, along with field excursions and innovative hands-on activities.
This one-year Secondary Physics PGCE runs from September through July. The school-led curriculum features an orientation for placements and weekly university sessions to deepen your understanding of subject content and teaching methods. Additionally, you'll complete 20 Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP) days focusing on core teaching competencies to refine your classroom skills.
For practical experience, you'll complete at least 120 days across two secondary schools and visit a primary school, gradually building your teaching confidence without immediate full-class responsibilities.

Career Prospects
Earning your PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) qualifies you to teach Physics in English secondary schools.
Many graduates secure teaching positions during their PGCE, often within our partner schools. After completing this course, you can pursue our Masters in Education program. Your PGCE awards Masters credits, allowing accelerated completion by your second teaching year.
