This master's program combines coursework with research components, allowing for specialized focus on Portuguese studies. You can explore various disciplines including linguistics, Latin American culture, history, politics, Spanish literature, and Latin American cinema. Our faculty members specialize in diverse areas spanning sociocultural research, historical and political studies, film and literary analysis, as well as linguistic and sociolinguistic investigations. For those pursuing an MLitt in Portuguese, we provide specialized guidance in these Spanish studies domains: Latin American anthropology, anthropological linguistics, and sociolinguistics (including Quechua studies with Prof Howard); semantics, language philosophy, and the historical development of Spanish across Latin America, including regional dialects and Creole languages (Prof Mackenzie); 19th-20th century Latin American political, social, and intellectual history, particularly in Brazil and the Southern Cone (Prof Hentschke); educational history in 19th-20th century Latin America (Prof Hentschke, Dr Oliart, Prof Howard); race and identity discourses in Latin America (Prof Howard, Dr Oliart, Dr Morgan); Latin American film, theater, and literary studies (Dr Page); Spanish and Latin American cultural history with focus on popular culture (Dr Catala Carracso, Dr Morgan, Dr Oliart, Dr Fernndez); Catalan nationalism studies (Dr Catala-Carrasco); and Spanish novel analysis (Dr Catala Carrasco).
