English teachers are in high demand across the globe. Our MA TESOL is a great choice whether you are a practising professional keen to take your English teaching to a higher level or a graduate looking to begin an exciting career that opens a world of possibilities.
The course is directed towards professional practice. While relevant theories will be presented and discussed, they are there to support you and enable you to make informed decisions in your professional practice. We place great emphasis on what we do as teachers, assessors, teacher trainers, writers, managers or researchers. Whatever your path in TESOL, this course will help you progress.
A strength of our course is its diversity and flexibility. This MA is open to both experienced teachers and to those who are interested in embarking on a career in TESOL.
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is a profession that could potentially take you around the globe. It can present opportunities for employment either as a member of a team of language teachers in an institution or it can offer the flexibility of being independent and freelance. An MA TESOL demonstrates knowledge and understanding of English language teaching, a familiarity with a range of relevant literature and an ability to research and to present informed discussions and ideas on related subjects.
What you'll learn
Applicants are expected to have a relevant Honours degree at 2:2 or above.
If English is not the first language an IELTS overall score of 6.0 is required, with no element below 5.5.
If your English is not quite at this level, our Pre-sessional programme is available to bring your English up to the level you need. There are some exceptions and if the IELTS requirement differs it will be specified on the course page.
We recognise that some applicants may not meet these standard requirements, yet may be desirable candidates with other and appropriate skills and knowledge. In this case they may be offered the opportunity to complete an orientation module or a portfolio to demonstrate their ability to work at level 7. Applicants may be asked to attend an interview.
The University accepts non-UK qualifications equivalent to those outlined above and confirmed through NARIC.
