A PhD by Public Works is an advanced research qualification awarded to individuals who have created a substantial body of publicly available work before enrollment that matches the innovation, consistency, and impact of a traditional PhD. This involves presenting previously published research outputs along with a critical analysis (limited to 30,000 words) that positions the work within its academic field and demonstrates its scholarly contribution. Both components undergo evaluation by examiners during an oral defense, measured against doctoral-level standards. Eligible submissions may include academic publications, creative works, performances, or research reports, with discipline-specific criteria. This part-time program typically requires completion within 18 months, with a maximum duration of 24 months and a minimum enrollment period of 12 months. The degree is offered across all university faculties, contingent upon supervisory availability.
