Our institution provides research supervision spanning diverse subject areas. We particularly welcome applications proposing to examine the societal aspects of environmental challenges within our regions of specialization, as well as studies in environmental governance and activism.
Research programs center on developing a thesis with expert guidance. Participants receive customized research training adapted to their specific requirements and prior educational background. Additionally, students may audit relevant courses without assessment to address any knowledge gaps.
With a rich academic heritage, our School represents one of Europe's most extensive and accomplished social science research networks. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) recognized 100% of our Social Work and Social Policy research as either world-leading or 'internationally excellent' for both impact and research environment.
The School maintains a vibrant postgraduate community, having awarded over £100,000 in Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) quota allocations, along with University and SSPSSR financial support packages to incoming students in 2010.
Faculty members focus on internationally significant comparative and theoretical research, with collective expertise in: nonprofit organizations and civil society, transnational and European welfare systems, healthcare and social services, labor markets and economic sociology, risk analysis and management, ethnicity and religious studies, policy analysis, sociology of the body, criminology and cultural studies, as well as contemporary sociological theory.
