This program offers you the chance to explore English alongside a second language of your choice.
The English Department boasts world-class authors and scholars, fostering a vibrant research community that provides both support and academic rigor. With strong cultural connections in Manchester and beyond, you'll find yourself in an ideal setting to start building professional relationships for your career.
Our curriculum takes a contemporary approach to literature, examining drama, fiction, and poetry from the 1600s to today—blending classic works with modern perspectives.
We emphasize flexibility, allowing you to tailor your studies as you advance. You can select specialized modules in areas like creative writing, film studies, or cultural theory. Alternatively, you might focus on regional literature from the US, Ireland, Africa, India, or the Caribbean.
As part of this degree, you'll also study modules in your selected modern language. Incorporating a language into your studies enhances your communication abilities, builds linguistic proficiency, and broadens cultural understanding. Options include French, Spanish, Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese.
