As a postgraduate scholar, you'll gain comprehensive instruction in research methodologies and teaching techniques, engage in academic conferences, and join both local and global research communities within your discipline. Our doctoral candidates actively contribute to shaping our research environment, helping coordinate seminars, working alongside faculty to arrange prominent research gatherings, and hosting their own yearly academic conference. Alumni from our PhD program have achieved notable careers in higher education, securing positions such as permanent lectureships at institutions including Exeter, Keele, Leicester, Lincoln, Liverpool, and Loughborough, along with international academic roles and diverse opportunities within media and cultural sectors. Faculty members guide postgraduate research across five primary domains: cultural economics and policy, linguistic social dynamics, media studies and historical memory, national identity and migration, and political discourse. We additionally support doctoral initiatives aligned with individual faculty research specialties. Detailed information about our supervision focus areas is available here, and potential candidates are advised to review faculty research profiles before reaching out to discuss their proposals. All communication and media doctoral students belong to the Centre for Research in Communication and Culture (CRCC), the UK's foremost research center in this field since its 1991 founding. The CRCC hosts ongoing seminar programs, academic events, and conferences focused on interdisciplinary communication studies. Additionally, the CRCC directs the Communication and Media pathway within the ESRC-funded Midlands Graduate School, which offers funding opportunities for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.
