The automotive sector has undergone remarkable transformations in recent years, with electrification and connectivity shaping the industry's future. Companies are adapting their engineering approaches, facing intense demands to cut development timelines and expenses through digital engineering processes. Loughborough's Automotive Engineering program equips students with specialized knowledge crucial for this evolving field and the future of land transportation.

Our unique Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering (one of just two in the country) boasts over five decades of experience in automotive education and industry collaboration. Unlike many UK programs, our curriculum integrates automotive applications from day one when teaching core engineering principles, reflecting our strong industry ties that keep our teaching aligned with current sector challenges.

Covering everything from innovative powertrain systems to specialized areas like Battery Technology and Machine Intelligence, the program also delivers fundamental instruction in Aerodynamics, Materials Science, Structural Engineering, and both Experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamics. This foundation ensures students master the enduring physical principles vital to contemporary vehicle engineering.

While automotive engineers rely heavily on theoretical knowledge, practical application remains equally crucial. Our program emphasizes hands-on learning, including a week-long session at HORIBA MIRA proving ground where students gather and interpret data on vehicle dynamics, noise levels, braking efficiency, and wet-weather performance. These experiential components bridge the gap between classroom concepts and real-world implementation.

As students progress toward leadership roles, teamwork and management abilities become increasingly important. The curriculum fosters these competencies through collaborative projects, such as designing next-generation vehicles, and culminates in a final-year individual research project tackling genuine engineering challenges.

Being part of the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering means benefiting from faculty engaged in cutting-edge transportation research. Our combination of world-class facilities, excellent instruction, and robust industry connections ensures graduates are thoroughly prepared for successful careers in this dynamic field.
