Your doctoral research at Lancaster can explore diverse subjects within Theatre Studies or interdisciplinary topics. As a PhD candidate, you'll typically receive guidance from two supervisors who provide consistent critical feedback and support throughout your studies. When necessary, your second supervisor may come from another discipline within the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts (LICA) or another university department to ensure the best expertise for your research project.
The Theatre Studies PhD at Lancaster offers two pathways: a traditional written dissertation or a combined approach integrating written analysis with creative practice. Our faculty includes active practitioners in theatre, film, art, and design, supported by specialized technicians and facilities like workshops, editing suites, and technical equipment.
As a LICA-based PhD student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), you'll join a vibrant, multidisciplinary research community with access to seminars, reading groups, conferences, and research training. Additional opportunities include pursuing a certification in higher education teaching.
