This program offers a chance to cultivate your research skills within a multidisciplinary academic setting. Our faculty collaborate with research centers and teams exploring diverse areas including Social Inequalities, Data Analytics, Human Mobility, and Migration Studies. Their expertise spans Actor-Network Theory, Practice-Based Theories, Cultural Analysis, racial studies, and various methodological approaches.
You'll learn alongside innovative sociological scholars in a vibrant, encouraging research atmosphere. As part of our global, cross-disciplinary community, you'll work alongside PhD candidates specializing in Sociology, Gender Research, Science Studies, Media and Cultural Analysis, and Applied Social Sciences. You'll receive guidance from typically two PhD supervisors, carefully matched to your research focus based on their current academic interests and specialized knowledge. The department maintains strong collaborative ties with other Lancaster University departments, sometimes enabling joint supervision arrangements.
Throughout the academic year, the Sociology Department provides specialized skills training and thesis development workshops tailored for postgraduate researchers.
