The Media and Cultural Studies PhD program at Lancaster University provides an opportunity to advance your expertise and conduct research in the dynamic field of media studies. Our faculty members explore diverse areas including television, digital media, cinema, journalism, and fan cultures, examining their connections to critical issues like social power, class dynamics, surveillance systems, gender relations, social disparities, and futuristic perspectives.
You'll become part of a global, multidisciplinary academic environment alongside PhD candidates from Sociology, Gender and Women's Studies, Science Studies, Media and Cultural Studies, and Applied Social Science. Each student receives supervision from typically two advisors, carefully selected based on their active research specializations to align with your chosen dissertation topic. The program fosters strong collaborative ties across Lancaster's departments, with some projects benefiting from joint supervision.
Throughout the academic year, the Sociology Department offers specialized skills training and dissertation workshops tailored for postgraduate researchers.
While you have the option to participate in relevant MA-level courses, these are not mandatory components of your doctoral degree requirements.
